So, this is my rant on an "unbeatable" craps system. Feel free to skip over it.

Critter List for Molokini Apr. 18th, 2008 @ 05:44 pm
We took the Pride of Maui out to Molokini Sorry, No good satellite image from Google

We got tasty burgers, and some drinks, but mostly we got to look at sea life:

In descending order of awesomeness:
  • Humpback Whales! (We saw five! A mother and calf 200 yards from the boat, plus a "male escort" a ways off. Then as we approached Molokini, two more just beyond the crater.

  • Whitetip reef shark! (We are unsure if we saw one or two. I followed it for a minute staying approximately forty feet directly above it. It followed the ground and I followed the surface.)

  • Black Triggerfish (Awesome because there was a school of about fifty at the surface and they didn't run if you swam through them.

  • Pennant Fish

  • Threadfin Butterfly Fish

  • Large unicorn fish, much larger than at Black Rock.

  • Orange-spined Tang

  • Unknown strugeon? fish, mostly black with a single brillant orange stripe on each side.

  • This one fairly unremarkable fish, except they kept coming right up to us. Mostly gray, upclose it had faint horizontial stripes. I would guess this is the fish they use in fish and chips.

  • Large blue/green fish (perhaps a Ulua?) swimming side by side with a trumpet fish of same color

  • Huma huma (Rectangular triggerfish)

  • Unknown Triggerfish (It was black and white, perhaps a boomerang triggerfish?)

  • Yellow-tail Wrasse? (It had a yellow tail)

  • Unknown fish that found our propeller blades delicious (we scared them away before starting the boat.) They were mostly black, but with brilliant blue dorsal fin and tail

  • Bluestripped Snapper

  • Yellow Tang

  • White-Spotted Puffer

  • and many more...

    Apr. 16th, 2008 @ 08:53 pm
So, here's a list of places we snorkeled:
  • Black Rock

  • Kahekili Beach (Old Airport)

  • Honolua Bay

  • Kapalua Bay

  • And here's a list of critters thus far:
  • Sea turtles

  • Humahumanukanukaapua'as (I even saw one swimming upside-down)

  • Trumpet fish

  • Needle fish (They hang out at the surface and they're hard to distinguish from the waves)

  • Red parrot fish

  • Unicornfish

  • Black trigger fish (Thanks for the ID, Carol!)

  • Yellow Tangs

  • White-Spotted Puffer (Robin chased several down for her mother's honor.)

  • Convict Tangs

  • Slate-Pencil Sea Urchins

  • Moorish Idol (A really cool fish, but it kept taunting us.)

  • Teardrop Butterfly (I know I've ID'd this one right, I saw the teardrop)

  • Bluestripped Snapper

  • These rather large gray(?) fish, about twice as big as anything thing else

  • Ghost crabs (No actually during snorkeling. They tunnel by carrying a lump of sand and then flinging it across the beach.

  • Aye...Sea Turtles Apr. 15th, 2008 @ 08:58 pm
I know it's been a long time posting, but I have to post about Black Rock. After I finally got in the water, Robin was already up to the rock, and I was swimming over and I saw a fish!

Sal: Robin! I saw a fish!
Robin: (Can't be bothered...currently playing with a school of 30 fish)

Turns out, there everywhere and not afraid of humans (unless you get really close.)

So, here's a list of creatures we saw at Black Rock in descending order of awesomeness:
  • Sea turtles

  • Humahumanukanukaapua'as

  • Trumpet fish

  • Needle fish

  • Red parrot fish

  • Unicornfish

  • Weird black fish with a single blue strip

  • Yellow Tangs

  • White-Spotted Puffer

  • Convict Tangs (the first one I saw, turns out it was the most common)

  • Slate-Pencil Sea Urchins

  • Scuba Divers

  • Snorkels

  • Random kid who almost kicked an endangered turtle in the head (didn't even see it at first.)
  • Other entries
    » Earthquake
A 5.6 earthquake hit near San Jose (about 20 miles from us for so). Robin and I are okay and nothing in our apartment was damaged. I think living this high in the air means the building dampens out the shaking. News reports seem to indicate that no one was hurt. And just today Robin and I were listening to "Wait Wait" where they were talking about the Loma Prieta earthquake.
    » The Big Bang Theory
I have to admit, The Big Bang Theory is starting to grow on me. Not quite how I remember Tech, but then again, I was an undergrad Mechanical Engineer, not a Physics graduate student, my shampoo is Safeway brand, not Star Wars brand, and our broken elevator was nothing more than a dumbwaiter. And perhaps Joe can find a spot for the show in his heart considering the show's main protagonist is skeptical of string theory. (Unless you've changed your mind on subject, Joseph?)
    » Reverting to literal definitions
Last night, it was pointed out to me that the word "terrific" is defined as an adjective for an object that strikes terror. That makes phrases like "They drove at terrific speed" and "I have a terrific headache" make more sense. But, to me, "terrific" has always had a "Gee willikers" ring to it. So, I've decide to start using and interpreting "terrific" using only the terror-striking definition. It's going to be awesome!
    » Gun-Hoe!!
So, after the strange events which can be retold by Robin here, I was reminded of the Gun-Blade from FFVIII and decided we need to see Squall with a Gun-Hoe

Edit: Originally, I had FF7 instead of FF8. This is more to do with my fumbling of Roman numerals than my understanding of the Final Fantasy universe...
» We won the toddler phone lottery
Based on the message left on our answering machine, I believe a small child is experimenting with the phone and managed to start the random-digit extravaganza with our phone number. The subsequent message has decent rhythm, but the beat is far too slow to dance to.
    » Slight inside joke
This is only slightly an inside joke.

See, this catch phrase got stuck in our heads one weekend. The joke? Now, it's stuck again....Muhahahaha!
    » Quick update
    1. I finished Harry Potter 7. Good book.
    2. I got my office today. Yay!

I'd write more, but I gotta study for my midterm.
    » Phase One Completed
My computer is slowly coming back to life. It now has a brand-spanking- (yes! It can spank! It's got a robot arm and everything.) new hard drive. On which I installed Ubuntu. So far, I'm fairly happy with the operating system...which I've been using for about ten minutes. Next step, copying files from my slightly corrupted Windows drive, followed by a recovery re-installation of Windows, so that I can use a couple of my Windows-only programs, (like City of Heroes and such...yes, I know there are programs that can let them run in Linux, but I prefer to let them run natively.) Okay, enough computer talk.
» How did the pig tracks get on the ceiling?

    » Knoppix to the rescue
It's been a long time since I've used this computer. I'm not sure what's wrong with it, but only because I've been too lazy/busy to spend any time figuring it out. However, I donwloaded Knoppix, a handy-dandy Linux version that fits on a bootable CD. So, now I'm in Linux using my old machine. Looks like my hard drive, memory, CD-roms, CPU/Motherboard (I've been treating them more as one lately, because it's difficult diagnose and buy them seperately.) all seem to be fine. Looks like the Windows boot got corrupted. So, now I gotta back all my stuff up (probably another hard drive purchase) and I'll be back on this machine. (Now the question becomes Windows or Linux...)
» How to kill science with democracy
Apparently, if you don't like science, you can just vote it away! After all, science is nothing more than an excepted set of rules made up by those pesky scientists...they're just going to change it anyways. Why bother?

So, of course, if you don't like science, just vote for the political candidate that rejects it. Why else would you vote for them?

At least that's apparently what the Bush administration thinks. According to their thinking, since they're elected for their opinions, it follows that all of their opinions are sanctioned by the American public, overriding any other source of information.

This I already suspected...but now it's become public, the ex-surgeon general reported being undermined by the Bush Administration Link to NY Times story.

They wanted him to not visit the Special Olympics because it has ties to the Kennedys. Are you serious? What association are you trying to prevent with that one? What message are you trying to prevent:

    Let's see:
Surgeon General Carmona visits the Special Olympics
The Special Olympics was founded by Eunice Kennedy Shriver
Both the Kennedy and Kerry familys are democrats (and not republicians! oh noes!)
The Kerry family has connection to ketchup giant Heinz
Ketchup is delicious on bacon cheeseburgers
Bacon cheeseburger and Kevin Bacon both have the word "Bacon" in them.

Sweet, I have no idea what I just did, but I did it in six degrees.
» If everyone is cheating...is anyone cheating?
Just now on NPR, talking about the upcoming Tour de' France, and they asked the question: "If everyone is cheating...is anyone cheating?" And while I consider that a valid question, I feel the answer is a certain "YES" for the reason that it then places a requirement on incoming athletes that they must use performance enhancing drugs. It seems to mantain a high quality of life for our athletes, we should ban performance enhancing drugs. Especially since if no one is cheating, then you have the same effect. The trick is to make the penalty for cheating so great, that you don't do it.
    » Death to direct-to-video
Ever notice how the phase "direct-to-video" seems to be a kiss of doom? Yeah, so does Disney. Apparently the Disney CCO watched an upcoming a sequel and pulled the plug. Awesome.

    Also, check out my Gazebo...alone.
    » (No Subject)
Robin and I watched the Iowa Corn 250 this morning. Here's our favorite prediction of the race:

Sal: So, this is the first race they've ever had on this track...
Robin: No one has raced on it, yet? Aww, I bet someone crashes on the first lap.

Within about ten seconds, the green flag waves, the cars accelerate and Tomas Scheckter crashes on the first lap. Whee! Caution on lap 1!

I feel really bad for the guy...but Robin called it.

A lot of really good drivers got involved in accidents today, including Robin's favorite driver, Danica Patrick and Tony Kanaan

So, then toward the end I was rooting for Marco Andretti, because he's been having a hard season, and Dario Franchitti, who won has been way too lucky
    » Really?

    Pretentiously academian
